About the photographer:
Alvan Yap spent one year in Timor Leste under the Singapore International Foundation’s overseas volunteer programme. Attached to the Agape School for the Deaf in the capital, Dili, he helped to develop a curriculum and a standardised sign language system.

Hearing-impaired himself, Alvan has a diploma in special education and had taught at the Singapore School for the Deaf for four years. He now works as an editor and writer with a local publishing company. Alvan took up photography as a hobby nine years ago; he stuck with a point-and-shoot camera for five years before he deemed himself worthy of a DSLR. These days, he makes pictures with prime lenses, available light and a whole lot of serendipity.
